Safety Tips for Classic Car Owners

Safety Tips for Classic Car Owners

Classic cars are nostalgic. They carry history and stories, character and charm that modern cars lack. But when it comes to safety, classic cars often fall short. Modern standards such as crumple zones, airbags and seatbelts are hard to come by in the classics we love. Fortunately, there are now modern upgrades that are temporary and non-invasive, so you can upgrade your safety while maintaining your Classic.

Buckle Up

It should go without saying, but seat belts are a must in your classic car. With the exception of New Hampshire, all states and the District of Columbia require adults in the front-seat to wear seat belts. Adults in the rear seats are also covered by laws in 31 states and the District of Columbia. (Please note, children are covered by different laws in all 50 states. The three-pointed seatbelt system we use today did not become standard in cars until 1968 when the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration passed Title 49. If your classic car is older than 1968, chances are you don’t have the seat belt required for your ride to be street legal. Upgrading is simple with a few tools and a little elbow grease.

Check the Brakes

Like seat belts, brake systems have come a long way. The old drum brakes found in classic cars are not as safe or efficient as modern disc brakes. If you’re going to utilize your vintage ride as everyday transportation, a brake upgrade is a must. This change will require more skill than your seat belt installation, but a car guru such as yourself can easily tackle this project in an afternoon.

Time to Shine

Just as technology has evolved with other systems, your car’s lights will need an overhaul. Classics use old sealed-beam headlight bulbs that are not as bright as modern halogens. Using your car at night or in the rain can become hazardous. Upgrading your headlights to modern halogens or even LEDs will make it easier for other drivers to see you.

Another light that will keep your classic road ready is Impulse, the first collision alert system for the driver behind you. The ultra-bright, pulsing LEDs are activated on hard braking and signal the driver behind you allowing them to react up to 50% faster. Adding this additional safety feature to the rear of your classic car will keep you safe and your hot rod intact.

Safety First. Always.
